videa.hu belongs to Mediaworks Hungary, that runs several websites,[1] mainly news websites, magazines, hungarian email provider freemail.hu, weather websites and so on, including origo.hu, the fifth most popular Hungarian news website. Videa hosts the video content for these news websites, besides user-uploaded content. Mediaworks claims to have 2-2.5 million monthly Videa users[2].
videa.hu runs videakid.hu that is a forntend of videa but with only family friendly content, the videakid uploads are searchable on videa.hu but redirect to the videakid.hu domain. videa.hu also ran videaloop.hu which allowed uploading gifs and short looping videos, this was discontinued on 2025 july 16, the content still can be found under the videa.hu domain.
Timeline
Videa.hu was founded by T-Online Magyarország(Hungarian branch of Deutsche Telekom), in 2006[3].
In the first quarter of 2016 Deutsche Telekom sold origo zrt. to the publisher of vs.hu, the government aligned(and secretly founded) New Wave Media Group for 13.2 million euros. This deal included Videa, freemail, many thematic websites, a blog hosting website and 2tv channels.[4]
In 2022 September 30 New Wave Media Group merged into KESMA(Central European Press and Media Foundation). KESMA was founded in 2018 and strongly tied to the then ruling party Fidesz.[5][6]. Kesma was speculated to be unlawfully founded by the Fidesz government by running government advertisements and advertisements of companies that have close ties to the government on only platforms that are uncritical of the government this way distorting a the Hungarian media scene.[7][8][9] Since the change of government in 2026 the sustainability of KESMA is uncertain.
Content
Videos are browsable in 12 different categories. Number of uploaded videos in these categories add up to 700,000 as of October 2020. The video corpus seems to include a lot of copyrighted content (most popular categories are film/animation and music). The site is being used as a CDN for many websites that host copyrighted content since it lets embedding video players and has no automated copyright checking system, it doesn't pay users for video revenue but contains ads.
