WhatsApp is an end-to-end encrypted instant messaging service owned by Facebook. It launched in 2009. In 2014, WhatsApp was brought by Facebook. Co-founder Brian Acton left WhatsApp in 2017 to work on the competitor service Signal.

WhatsApp supports cloud backup onto Google Drive and exporting messages to a text file.

There are 3rd party tools to allow viewing chats from the internal file format(s):

• Whatsapp Viewer
• WhatCrypt Tools seem to allow for database encryption, but since it's an online service I would think twice about uploading anything personal there. The site vanished in 2023.
