Threads or Threads.net is a microblogging service and social network by Meta's Instagram, directly competing against Twitter (later renamed X). It launched in July 2023, initially as an iOS and Android app, but a web version was later made available about a month and a half later in August.
Threads features opt-in partial fediverse integration using the ActivityPub protocol. Users who have opted in to federation and who have their posts federated onto another instance appear as username@threads.net. Some fediverse operators have taken to limiting or completely blocking federation from Threads, often citing rationales such as Meta's artificial intelligence ventures. Similarly, Meta also blocks other fediverse instances for hosting content that would violate its own TOS, for failing to comply with right-to-be-forgotten requests or not having a privacy policy, or for not having a publicly accessible feed. Meta maintains a list of the fediverse servers it blocks from federating onto Threads.net.
