Foundation Management for SR, SVT, and UR is owned by the Swedish state for semi-direct control of SR, SVT, and UR; Swedish Radio, Swedish Television, and Education Radio respectively. These services have been given the duty to provide content to all of Sweden, including news, fiction, entertainment, sport, culture, history, science, etc and their content plays a big part in local culture, urban and suburban alike.[1][2]

SVT is short for Swedish Television. The svt.se domain includes SVT text services with short video clips. Services provided by https://www.svt.se include News, Local News, Sports, Recipes, "Text-TV", and Weather, among many more. svt.se lacks a sitemap.

https://omoss.svt.se/ shows an about-us site with other links including a blog and news about SVT itself.

SVT self-reports that almost 90% of Swedes take part in some of their services every week and 60% use SVT Play in an average week. [3]

Barnkanalen

The domain svt.se also includes https://www.svt.se/barnkanalen - "The Children's Channel". Hosts common children's shows such as Bluey but also has many original shows such as Pax. It uses a different UI to present child-oriented shows at https://www.svtplay.se

Vital Signs

  • Content, especially news, is regularly removed

SVT Play is short for Swedish Television Play and is the video-on-demand service of the SVT company. Content is directed towards all ages and is typically in Swedish although English and several minority languages are also common. Although the service is global, a considerable portion of videos are unviewable outside of Sweden.[2].

A service known as "Öppet Arkiv" or Open Archive exists on the site but only a minority of shows end up on it and not even then is it completely safe from removal.

Structure

The start menu shows content split into Programs and Channels.

https://www.svtplay.se/kanaler shows the following live SVT channels:

  • svt1 - Sweden's biggest TV channel with program in any genre.[3]
  • svt2 - Focuses on facts, culture, and society including minority languages and "SVT Forum".[3]
  • svt24 - Starts after svt BARN closes and has content from SVT1, SVT2, and SVT Play[3]
  • svt BARN - "svt KIDS" is a channel completely without advertising for kindergarteners to teenagers and includes its own programs as well as bought and dubbed programs.[3]
  • Kunskapskanalen - "The knowledge channel", content accessible via https://kunskapskanalen.se/ which is a cooperation between UR and SVT. Its content consists of a mix of sciences, history, and documentaries.[3]

Sometimes the live channels refer to programs outside of SVT such as https://www.urplay.se

https://www.svtplay.se/program shows the video-on-demand series and movies as a list as well as in 17 categories, for instance:

Vital Signs

  • Content, especially news, is regularly removed due to problems with licensing, copyright, and/or storage. In the case of licensing running out, which is quite frequent, the content is removed and solely kept in their private archives for the chance of a license renewal. At some point, content is deleted from the private archives as well, rather than keeping it until the copyrights run out.

UR Play

UR is short for Educational Radio, although is much more than simply radio. https://www.ur.se hosts an about-us as well as explaining the site.

UR Play hosts both video and audio with a comprehensive search feature for teachers and students as well as general categories. They take the same approach to language as SVT Play, although with more language-centric media. UR is dedicated to distributing free education to everyone, although does have a paywall . Content behind the paywall allegedly stays up longer than free-to-access content.[4]

SR Is short for Sweden's Radio and has a multitude of channels, the largest portion being local ones. The supported languages can be seen on the main page, examples include Swedish, English, Ukrainian, Romani, and Samí but is more extensive. Contrary to the other services, it does not seem like any content is removed regularly, but audio takes up far less space than video.
