Gmane is a mailing list archive & email-to-news gateway for a whole lot of free software mailing lists (and other mailing lists as well). It's been running since 2002, with 14,920 mailing lists & a total of 155,913,672 messages in the archive, as of October 2015.

On July 28, 2016, Lars Magne has declared that he may shut down the web servers, but he has stated he is willing to deliver the database and control of the gmane.org domain to any interested parties.
