Vital Signs
e621 is hosted in Arizona, United States, and is at risk of being impacted by any age-verification laws passed by that state.
Archival
e621 is open-source, at https://github.com/e621ng/e621ng. It has an API documented at https://e926.net/wiki_pages/2425, rate-limited at 2 requests/second. It also provides the last 4 days of database dumps at https://e621.net/db_export/ for posts, tags, and the wiki (but not the forum or comments on posts). The posts database dump includes md5 hashes, tags, descriptions, source URLs, and other data for all posts, including deleted/blacklisted ones. One deleted post has an extremely long description, which may cause issues with CSV parsers in their default configuration.
Original sized files are located at https://static1.e621.net/data/{md5[0:2]}/{md5[2:4]}/{md5}.{file_ext}
, with thumbnails and transcoded videos located in other directories.[1] The only exception is deleted posts, which are located in a different directory and require authentication.[2]
Navigation on the site via tags will persist the tag on individual posts (e.g. navigating from https://e926.net/posts?tags=steamboat_willie gives https://e926.net/posts/4508467?q=steamboat_willie, not https://e926.net/posts/4508467); as such saving the site in a way that can be navigated on web.archive.org is impractical.
Archives
e621.net_make_list.py was used to generate lists of full-size https://static1.e621.net/ URLs in May 2025 (up to post 5592120), which were ran in ArchiveBot. Although that script has functionality to generate lists of thumbnails/transcoded videos, this was not tested and not ran. Frontend URLs (both the tag list and individual posts) and were not saved. The forum has not been saved.
