Data[how to use] archiveteam_uploadir

Uploadir is a free file hoster that has been around since 2009.

Similar to Pomf.se and its clones, the site allows hotlinking to images and videos.

In November 2022, the site announced to go offline at the of the year. However, that decision was later reverted.

Shutdown notice

On 2022-11-03, the front page displayed the message the following shutdown message:

Uploadir is shutting down 30th of December 2022

Please backup any files you have stored with Uploadir.

The date was later in November changed to January 2023. On 2022-12-19, the notice disappeared from the site.

Archival

Upon request, the site owner helped ArchiveTeam save the anonymously uploaded files from the site:

  • they range from 2009-12-17 to 2022-11-21
  • out of 416,491 files, 211,872 were 404ed (anonymous uploads can be deleted via a special link)
  • exact size: TODO

However, the user uploads have not been provided (88,620 uploads as of 2022-11-26).

Interview

While archiving the site, we asked the admin some questions on 2022-12-19:

What was your motivation behind creating uploadir in 2009?

I used it as a way to learn how to program and file upload websites were the fashion in 2009.

Do you have other people helping you with the site or is it a one-man project?

It's only me, this is why change takes so long.

Your service is completely free for everyone and you serve no ads on the site. Have you ever thought about allowing donations to fund the upkeep costs or something similar?

I have thought about it and at one time it did have ads on the download page but it didn't generate enough to cover the costs. I am not confident having a paid for service or donates is viable as you have other competitors with better pricing and resources e.g. Google, Apple, Dropbox, etc.

Your site is one the few hosters that support linking to images and videos directly. Has that ever been a problem?

No, although this is not to say there is a problem. I suspect I need to have stricter content security policy headers and a separate sub-domain.

Do you have some stats for the site? for example: total size & amount of all files ever uploaded, traffic

2.2 TB of files uploaded, 718,000 total uploads

Why are you stepping down as the owner of the site?

The cost of operating the service primarily. I've also had some recent abuse reports from my hoster and it is not worth the effort to moderate the content.

Ownership Change

The site owner told us on 2022-12-18 that they have found a new owner for the site.

They noted that the ownership will be transferred in December 2022/January 2023.
