Heroes of Newerth is an early entrant to the action-based real-time strategy (or ARTS) genre of video games released in 2010, which bears a lot of similarities to the original Defense of the Ancients (DotA) mod for Warcraft III. It was developed by the now-defunct S2 Games through to 2015, after which Frostburn Studios (itself a subsidiary of Garena) took over. Although most original DotA players have since moved on to Dota 2, Heroes of Newerth was respected by many at the time as a "successor" of sorts to DotA before Valve announced Dota 2, in part because it wasn't League of Legends and didn't actively try to hurt the legacy of the original mod.

Shutdown

Frostburn Studios announced on the game's Facebook page that it would be shutting Heroes of Newerth down on June 20th, 2022, but not before having a few additional "farewell events" before then.

Dear Heroes of Newerth (HoN) players,[IAWcite.todayMemWeb]

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) has been in service for a long time. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has been on this journey, created special memories together with us, moved HoN forward, and created a lot of unforgettable stories for HoN, as well as making Heroes of Newerth become one of the most popular MOBA games in history.

The Heroes of Newerth team regrets to announce that Heroes of Newerth’s service will officially come to an end on June 20, 2022.

We, the Heroes of Newerth Team, would like to thank our players for all the support we’ve been receiving all this time. Please find the schedule and details of key dates for everyone below:

December 13, 2021

  • Gold Coins will no longer be purchasable at 9am Eastern Time (EST, GMT -5).

December 31, 2021

  • New accounts can no longer be created.

June 20, 2022

  • Close down Heroes of Newerth’s services, and gradually close down other official communication platforms for Heroes of Newerth over time.

Last but not least, even though the journey of HoN or Heroes of Newerth has come to an end, we believe that all the valuable memories of our players through all these years will never fade away.

On June 20, 2022, a notice went up on the game's home page stating that "HoN is now officially closed. Thank you for playing!". The official forum is also offline, however other assets like the game's installer as well as its fan site asset kit remain available for download as of July 3rd.

Game assets

Frostburn Studios has a relatively liberal IP use policy, which even goes as far as offering kits containing concept art and game assets for fan sites which allows for easy setup and access without needing to use teardown tools to extract from game files.
