GameFront (or Game Front) is a video game file hosting and news website originally launched in 1998. Formerly known as FileLeech and FileFront, the site has a long and complex history of ownership[1].
Ziff Davis Media era (2005-2009)
In March 2009, Ziff Davis Media filed for bankruptcy, and FileFront was announced to be suspended on 2009-03-30. It was hosting 1.5 million files totalling 48+ TB at the time[citation needed]. However, as of 2009-04-02, it looks like there may have been an 11th hour reprieve for FileFront: according to a message reportedly from the original founders of the service[2], the site had been re-acquired by them in order to prevent its proposed shuttering.
Break Media era (2010-2013)
In 2010, Break Media acquired FileFront. On 2010-11-30, the site rebranded to GameFront[3].
Defy Media Gaming Network era (2013-2016)
After Break Media merged with Alloy Digital in 2013 to form Defy Media, the site was continued under the new company.
In 2015, news updates stopped being posted to the site, which prompted the ArchiveTeam to create an archiving project for the site, which saved most of the files as web archives (which are also available through the IA's WayBack service at their original URLs, for example).
On April 14, 2016, an announcement[IA•Wcite•.today•MemWeb] was posted indicating the site was closing on April 30.
DBolical era (2016-)
In August 2016, DBolical, the company behind Mod DB and Indie DB, relaunched GameFront having acquired the domain from Defy Media[4]. The content from before the 2016 shutdown site was restored by volunteers in early 2018, including files, metadata, and the forums[5].
