goo.gl was Google's URL shortener. It was shut down on 2025-08-25, with the exclusion of links that were active in late 2024. During 2025, links affected by the shutdown redirected to an interstitial page, with unaffected links not displaying the redirect.[1]
Shutdown timeline
- 2018-03-30: Google announces the deprecation of goo.gl and the transition to a new platform (Firebase Dynamic Links).[2]
- 2018-04-13: Anonymous users and people who haven't used the shortener before can no longer create new shortlinks.[2]
- 2019-03-30: No new shortlinks can be created anymore. Existing shortlinks continue to resolve.[2]
- 2024-07-18: The timeline for full shutdown is announced.[3]
- 2024-08-23: An interstitial page is beginning to roll out, warning users that the links will be broken in the future.[3]
- 2025-08-25: The service will be shut down with the exclusion of links that were active in late 2024.[3][1]
Wayback Machine notes
Since Wayback Machine is case-insensitive (User:arkiver is trying to have it changed), you may get multiple hits when short URLs collide (a particularly bad case). Unless it is fixed, use your common sense; failing that, try poking someone with raw data access.
