Wattpad is a website for uploading and reading fictional stories founded on December 2006. As of September 2023, the site has more than 90 million users registered and 665 million stories uploaded.[1]
In August 10th, 2026 Wattpad changed their Content Guidelines, particularly regarding explicit content, which has raised concerns among users about a potential "smut ban." The new guidelines clarify that explicit scenes are allowed if they involve characters who are 18 or older and if the sexual content supports the story rather than being the main focus.[2] Multiple Wattpad users after this change moved to other websites like Archive of Our Own, but it is known that most of the stories, mainly the ones from inactive accounts will be deleted.
Archival
Wattpad can't be archived through the Wayback Machine because the domain is excluded. Most of the archives were done from other web archiving services like Archive.today, GhostArchive, etc., but most of the time the webpages aren't archived correctly due of CAPTCHAs or due to 403 errors.
On July 30, 2026, a collection was created a collection on the Internet Archive called Wattpad Library by Kittyluv, which uses a tool made on Python to compile a story to a PDF file, scrap the metadata and uploading them on the Internet Archive. The tool is currently closed-source but it is planed to be open-source when it is finished.
