TheTVDB is an online database containing metadata about movies and television shows, similar to IMDb and The Movie Database (TMDB). It is owned by Whip Media, which also owns the TV Time service that allows people to track TV shows/movies and rate aspects of them using TheTVDB's metadata.

Potential impact of TV Time shutdown

On July 1, 2026, TV Time, perhaps the most notable user of TheTVDB's data, announced through an in-application notification that it would be going offline on July 15, saying that it was no longer sustainable to sustain as a free service, with little demand for a paid app.

While the site offers an API to other interested firms for a fixed yearly licensing fee and claims to have several types of service providers using its data on its About page, and although there has not been an official announcement about it so far, given that TheTVDB is also owned by Whip Media and uses TV Time in its Trending Movies & TV section, the future of TheTVDB should also be regarded to be in substantial doubt. Whenever possible, competing service Trakt has heavily focused on switching its data sources from TheTVDB over to TMDB, which is owned by TiVo, including a comparison tool to help reconcile differences and irregularities between the two sites' sets of metadata for TV series. Any potential shutdown of TheTVDB after the demise of TV Time would also end up indirectly hurting Trakt, particularly with metadata for larger web video creators, as TMDB is much more strict in its Contribution Bible with regard to disallowing YouTube creators unless their works are specifically released as an Original.

Additionally, developer activity appears scant, with no social media activity since 2022/2023, and minimal to no activity in TheTVDB's GitHub organization since 2024. Moderators do screen user contributions to the site on an active basis, though.
