5ch is one of Japan's largest anonymous online message boards, established in 1999. Originally called "2channel" and founded by Hiroyuki Nishimura, it underwent a transfer of ownership and internal disputes in 2014, leading to Jim Watkins, the administrator of 8chan/8kun, becoming the administrator and resulting in the current name .

Vital signs

5ch's vulnerability to cyberattacks and script-based trolling has resulted in a dramatic decrease in users. Daily post counts continue to decline, and archived board data remains inaccessible due to a cyberattack in 2023.5ch official log

History [1]

2ch/5ch History (Simplified)
Date Event
1999-05-30 Hiroyuki Nishimura launched "2channel" as a refuge from issues plaguing "Amezo Bulletin Board," including trolling and server instability.
1999-12-26 - 29 Server problems, trolling, and a virus threatened 2channel's parent site, "Amezo." However, most users had already migrated to 2channel.
1999-12-30 "Amezo" shut down, concluding its two-year run. This led to a complete user migration to 2channel, further fueling its growth.
2001 A 1,000-post limit per thread was implemented.
2001-08-25 Server instability due to increasing traffic led to the closure of numerous boards on 2channel, posing a significant threat to the site's existence.
2001-08-30 "Futaba Channel" was created as a backup for 2channel. Futaba's open-source software later served as the foundation for 4chan, known as the "English-language version of 2channel/Futaba Channel," launched in October 2003
2003-01 2channel began logging and storing IP addresses for all posts, ending its complete anonymity. This was implemented in response to increasing instances of threats, defamation, and criminal activity facilitated through the platform.
2004-01-10 A coordinated "F5 attack" (continuous reloading) from South Korean internet users overwhelmed 2channel servers with over 300 million hits in a day. The attack was reportedly motivated by anti-Korean websites and the Japanese government's plan to issue Takeshima (Dokdo) postage stamps.
2004-05-25 A potential outage of "2ch.net" on May 29th was averted due to successful efforts by the administrators during a server migration and DNS transfer. This marked the second major threat to 2channel's continued operation
2004-05-28 - 29 A full system migration resulted in various issues, including posting failures, delayed processing leading to duplicate posts, and server crashes. The problems were eventually resolved.
2005-07-17 ddos attack overloaded some servers, making several boards inaccessible. Peak attack rates reached approximately 130,000 accesses in 10 minutes.
2006-06-19 Following intermittent server outages, administrator "FOX★" attributed the problems to an attack. DoS attack with 500 million accesses per second was later identified as the cause.
2007-03-05 The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Hiroyuki Nishimura faced over 400 million yen in debt from legal actions, having lost 43 out of over 50 civil lawsuits.

2010 This year saw a significant increase in civil lawsuits aiming to obtain court orders for the deletion of posts and disclosure of user information on 2channel. 2channel complied with court orders that were correctly filed. According to the National Police Agency, harmful online content increased by 75% in the first half of fiscal year 2010 compared to 2009, with 2channel having the most unremoved content following deletion requests for the second consecutive year.
2010-03-01 A large-scale cyberattack from South Korea (a primitive F5 reload attack involving approximately 50,000 users) rendered 2channel inaccessible for over a day. The attack was believed to be in response to posts about South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna's gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the death of a South Korean student in Russia. This attack also affected US government-related servers sharing the same hosting server, causing approximately $2.5 million USD in damages. Pacific Internet Exchange (San Francisco, California), the server administrator, filed a complaint with the FBI and San Francisco Police Department, considering legal action.
2010-03-02 Most servers were restored by the evening, but logs from boards hosted on the Dubai server were permanently lost.

2011-08-25 A large-scale server outage occurred from around 11:45 AM due to an attack exploiting an Apache vulnerability. Most 2channel servers were temporarily down. Partial recovery occurred around 3:30 AM, but some servers remained inaccessible.
2011-11-24 The operating company's office in Sapporo was raided by police, who seized four boxes of documents and PCs. One of 2channel's servers went down during the raid, making boards like the "Drugs/Illegal" board inaccessible.
