<br />
Reddit is a content aggregator and social bookmarking service similar to the likes of Digg. Users can submit links, text posts, images and videos, vote and comment on submissions in communities called "subreddits". It received considerable attention from its twelve-hour SOPA blackout early in January 2012.<br />
<br />
Reddit "quarantines" some controversial subreddits. Many of such quarantine subreddits have been deleted, and to date no quarantined subreddit has ever emerged unscathed, so it is important to make backups of them. Here is a list of quarantined reddits.<br />
<br />
It contains some subredits devoted to similar goals as ArchiveTeam, including /r/AbandonedWebsites, /r/ForgottenWebsites, & /r/DataHoarder, which are worth checking for material to be added to ArchiveBot or otherwise benefit from the attention of the team.<br />
<br />
In addition to the old.reddit.com subdomain, old Reddit can also be accessed from www.reddit.com by setting the cookie <code>redesign_optout</code> to <code>true</code>.<br />

<b>If you are seeing RSYNC errors: If the error is about max connections (either -1 or 400), then this is normal. This is our (not amazingly intuitive) method of telling clients to try another target server (we have many of them). Just let it retry, it'll work eventually. If the error is <i>not</i> about max connections, please contact us on IRC (see the infobox).</b><br />
<br />
<b>If you are seeing HOSTERRs, check your DNS. We use Quad9 for our containers.</b><br />
<br />
<b>If you need support or wish to discuss, contact us on IRC (see the infobox).</b><br />

== Vital signs ==<br />
<br />
* <s>Appears stable, though a small to medium size team is a concern.</s><br />
* 2015-10-06: The admins carried out bannings of several subreddits claiming they were harassing people, the most notable of which was /r/fatpeoplehate. This has instilled some fear, uncertainty, and doubt in some part of the userbase, with a few claiming that reddit will soon become what Digg is now: nearly dead.<br />
* <s>Extremely endangered</s> - many subreddits were picketing after the firing of a reddit employee named Victoria by turning themselves private or restricting submissions.<br />
* Caution - Reddit seems to have calmed down and returned to normal functionality after Ellen Pao's firing, and the Reddit team is making serious reforms (reducing shadowbanning, more mod tools). However, the revolt left unresolved issues and sour grapes within the community, and it seems Reddit was only saved by the lack of a practical alternative (Voat.co was crushed and went offline due to floods of refugees). It would be wise to preemptively archive the site before another crisis occurs.<br />
* On July 3rd, 2015, Jason Baumgartner completed his 14-month effort to archive Reddit's entire publicly available textual content, just in time before the onset of the Reddit revolt. The archive is still updated monthly. The files are available here. However, images and videos hosted by Reddit are not archived.<br />
* In 2017-2018, Reddit has carried out bannings of several subreddits including r/incels and r/maleforeveralone, which had tens of thousands of subscribers each. Other subreddits including r/Braincels, r/foreveralone, r/TheRedPill and r/MGTOW are endangered. Discussions and petitions about banning those subreddits are currently taking place.<br />
* In 2018, a new, redesigned website became the default version of Reddit. This redesigned version has numerous usability issues. It heavily relies on JS and is essentially uncrawlable without dedicated code. The pre-redesign version of Reddit continues to be available at old.reddit.com.<br />
* In March 2019, /r/watchpeopledie, /r/Gore, and some other subs were banned after the Christchurch shooting – this was clearly not due to the video recording of that shooting getting shared (that was forbidden on WPD at least) but due to the negative press coverage, just like for previous bans.<br />
* Also in March 2019, /r/Piracy got threatened by Reddit's legal team with a ban due to the mods allegedly doing too little against copyright infringement.<br />
* Reddit has quarantined manosphere subreddits including /r/Braincels, /r/TheRedPill. /r/Braincels was banned on October 30, 2019.<br />
* Users began to spot in December 2019 that comment threads, at least on the "new" version of the site, were being locked behind a registration wall in an apparent A/B test.<br />
* On 29 June 2020, Reddit banned about 2,000 subreddits, most of them inactive. The ten most popular subreddits (by daily users) were r/DarkHumorAndMemes, r/ChapoTrapHouse (Wikipedia), r/ConsumeProduct, r/DarkJokeCentral, r/GenderCritical, r/Cumtown, r/Wojak, r/The_Donald (Wikipedia), r/imgoingtohellforthis2, and r/TheNewRight.<br />
* Subreddits may be banned merely for lack of moderation, as has happened in May 2021 to some subreddits such as /r/SlivkiShow (popular russian YouTuber), /r/AndroidQuestion (without "s" at the end), and /r/FlashGaming. Posts are no longer visible; instead the error "This subreddit was banned due to being unmoderated." appears.<br />
* In 2021 reddit communities went private after reddit hired a controversial person<br />
* On April 18, 2023, Reddit announced that they would be adding new restrictions to their API terms, begin enforcing rate limits, and introduce a paid API tier starting June 19, 2023.<br />
* On May 1, 2023, Reddit banned Pushshift; "ingest ceased May 1st around 17:02 GMT" Archives of previous data were made inaccessible on May 8, 2023.<br />
* On 19 May, Pushshift began returning various errors when accessing its public API. Later, the API page was replaced by a notice: "Check back in the next few weeks for updates." A torrent containing submissions and comments from June 2005 to December 2022 is available on Academic Torrents. as in frozen: no further edits are allowed, but content is still available. The copyright status of the wiki had always been questionable. Elsewhere in 2019, some companies escalated their dubious copyright claims on lyrics against other aggregators like Google and LyricFind (who had also given a license to Wikia).<br />
<br />
As of 2020, some old dumps (at least one from 2017) are linked from Special:Statistics, but give an error 403 (code "InvalidObjectState" or just "AccessDenied"). Other dumps work and appear to be served from Glacier (at least one 2018 dump returns an HTTP 200 with header "x-amz-storage-class: GLACIER").<br />
<br />
As of February 2020, Wikia wikis get created and shut down at a rate of over 4000 per week. The very large majority of inactive, closed and deleted wikis are just wikis which failed to receive any real contribution in their life; however, sometimes things are more complicated.<br />
<br />
As of February 2020, some wikis are listed as active which are actually fatally broken due to a database error (missing database table): . A certain pattern in their names suggests they might have been hit by some particularly harsh form of deletion which eradicates the database tables before the wikis are even fully removed from MediaWiki configuration.<br />
<br />
In November 2021, several NSFW wikis were forcefully shut down.<br />
<br />
In late 2021, the remaining Wikia-branded wikis were migrated to the fandom.com domain.<br />
<br />
On January 19 2021, it was announced that the LGBTQIA+ wikis will be merged together.<br />
<br />
== Moved wikis ==<br />
There have been substantial numbers of wiki communities leaving Wikia for various reasons, including two ad-heavy forced reskins in 2008 and 2010 and censorship of images to a PG13 level in 2012. Wikia has a de-facto policy of leaving the old wiki open and editable after the community has gone elsewhere, as a direct competitor to the new sites. This leaves two (or more) forks of the same project.<br />
<br />
Do *not* presume the Wikia version of a wiki is the only version or the most up-to-date version as it may be years out of date if the original authors left years ago. There is a partial list of moved wikis at http://awa.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Moved_wikis<br />
<br />
Former Wikia projects which are now independent will need to be backed up individually from their new homes.<br />
<br />
Some wikis which moved out of Wikia have since been brought back under Wikia's umbrella with the purchase of Gamepedia, for instance PvXwiki (later gwpvx.com and gwpvx.gamepedia.com).<br />
<br />
Wikia's own wikis are not reliably reached by following redirects between domains, since the split into wikia.org and fandom.com. Especially problematic are non-English wikis, which are now second-class citizens of the URL structure. For instance https://academicjobs.wikia.com/ redirects to https://academicjobs.wikia.org/ but https://parnu.wikia.com redirects to Not a valid community although https://parnu.wikia.org/et/ exists; https://parnu.wikia.org/ doesn't redirect to the proper path but instead shows an error message which links the correct path. http://et.parnu.wikia.com/ does redirect to the new location https://parnu.wikia.org/et/ .<br />
<br />
== Acquisition of Curse Media ==<br />
Curse is the home of a successful Fandom competitor - Gamepedia - and many other gaming related projects, including end-of-life websites.<br />
<br />
On 2018-12-12 it was announced that Fandom would acquire Curse Media (but in fact seems to be the complete Curse LLC?)<br />

== Merger of LGBTQIA+ wikis ==<br />
On January 19, 2021, the following was posted on several wikis by a Fandom staff member: <br />
<blockquote>Hello,<br />
<br />
Fandom is a place for all fans and we want to ensure everyone feels welcome and represented. Last year, we published a LGBTQIA+ resources page and Gender Identity Guidelines to provide relevant content and guidance in the sexuality and gender identity space. As we continue to improve our LGBTQIA+ efforts at Fandom, we realize there is a need to have a well-sourced, safe resource for the deeper world of LGBTQIA+ topics beyond what we have already published.<br />
<br />
We are excited to introduce LGBTQIA+, a new wiki community that will serve as the home for all information about sexuality and gender identity. This will be a consolidated version of the former wiki pages and at launch will include just the main articles needed to help people who are searching for information. We worked closely with a number of LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies as we developed this wiki and to ensure the most accurate information continues to live on this wiki, there will be an emphasis on sourcing articles. For example: as content is added to this wiki, only official terms that are recognized by people working on LGBTQIA+ issues will be approved.<br />
<br />
As we begin to consolidate our LGBTQIA-related wikis, we will redirect all users to our LGBTQIA+ wiki. To ensure our content is inclusive and provides a wide range of information, our admins (who are LGBTQIA+ community members) have thoughtfully been building out wiki pages that represent a wide range of topics covering all identities, sexualities, historic LGBTQIA+ events, activism and more.<br />
<br />
One exception to the merge is the Ezgender wiki, which will host articles outlining specific genders, orientations and pronouns, including pages of xenogenders from other wikis. The main LGBTQIA+ Wiki will have a page on xenogenders (with examples), but not the thousands of pages as on other wikis.<br />
<br />
We are giving you the upcoming few weeks to make sure that your content is migrated to EZGender as necessary or, if you so choose, exported to another host.<br />
<br />
We realize this is a significant change, but I hope you'll engage with our new community and support our efforts for stronger LGBTQIA+ representation. <br />
</blockquote><br />
<br />
This decision was apparently made without community involvement and against their wishes. <br />
<br />
This decision was apparently also made without involvement of the staff of the Ezgender wiki, which will be the only existing wiki to remain untouched. <br />

== Download ==<br />
Like Wikipedia, Wikia content is primarily available under a free content license, usually the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. Unlike Wikipedia, Wikia wikis don't enjoy from regular production of data dumps, so the possibility to reuse their content is rather limited and their survival is more at risk.<br />
<br />
XML dumps of the content of a wiki, when available, are linked from its Special:Statistics page (example for Wookieepedia: Special:Statistics).<br />
<br />
Dumps are produced only on demand, hence – normally – for a small minority of wikis (in a typical month, about 50 random wikis are dumped). Users with appropriate rights (as of 2013, autoconfirmed users, sysops and higher) can request a dump at the same Special:Statistics; the request is processed in a "first in, first out" queue, max one wiki every 5 minutes, usually during low traffic hours (23–8 UTC). For small wikis, a new dump may be created in mere seconds after the request.<br />
<br />
There are two XML dumps per wiki (both in 7z format, formerly gzip):<br />
* Full history dump (large), e.g. https://s3.amazonaws.com/wikia_xml_dumps/m/mu/muppet_pages_full.xml.7z<br />
* Last version dump (small), e.g. https://s3.amazonaws.com/wikia_xml_dumps/m/mu/muppet_pages_current.xml.7z<br />
* Images: _images.tar (not always produced)<br />
<br />
More information can be found at Wikia:Database download.<br />
<br />
=== History ===<br />
<br />
Two "complete" dumps of Wikia exist, 2008 and 2010. A 2007 dump (not verified) also exists. After 2010, Wikia stopped making regular dumps. At some point around 2010, Wikia also started deleting inactive wikis, so it's possible that some content only exists in those early dumps.<br />
<br />
A December 2012 dump of unknown completeness is the last one made available on the domain http://dumps.wikia.net/. The XML contained in it should be good, but were not all verified.<br />
<br />
In May 2013, only a couple dumps were produced every day, around 2-3 UTC, whatever amount of dumps is requested; till October 2013, no XML dumps were produced at all, only images.tar dumps of all the uploads to a wiki.<br />
If you request too many dumps, your account may be blocked from requesting more, without notice (the button to request a dump disappears).<br />
<br />
A directory list to access to all backups used to be at http://dumps.wikia.net/ ; no equivalent for the new host exists. All dumps (about 50k wikis) have been erased in July 2013 due to unspecified technical problems. Since 2013-10-02 the dumps are produced again and stored on Amazon's S3: all the previous dumps were lost.<br />
Since about November 2013, dumps have been (very) slowly repopulated after user requests, but bigger wikis have invalid gz files.<br />
<br />
A script to list all unarchived Wikia wikis has been produced.<br />
<br />
As of 2015-01, dumps for closed/archived/"old" wikis (how many?) will no longer be published and the 7z format is used instead. There are other bugs which make many big wikis have invalid XML files (prematurely terminated before <code></mediawiki></code>). In February 2016 there was an attempt to fix the XML, but as of 2017-07 it's still broken.<br />
<br />
As of 2017, only administrators are allowed to request a dump update for a wiki.<br />
<br />
In 2018-2019, Wikia became known as problematic for censoring user-generated content, sometimes closing entire wikis for fear of offending advertisers. Uncyclopedia, killed 2019-05-14, is one example. Wikia might leave an XML dump (text only, no images) available for download temporarily after a closure - but does not always do so.<br />
<br />
Since 2016, several domain name changes have happened. Most wikis were moved under fandom.com, some under wikia.org. Additionally, language-specific subdomains have been eliminated and replaced by directories on the same subdomain, for instance townn-titles.fandom.com/ru.<br />

For example: as content is added to this wiki, only official terms that are recognized by people working on LGBTQIA+ issues will be approved.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We are giving you the upcoming few weeks to make sure that your content is migrated to EZGender as necessary or, if you so choose, exported to another host.<br />
<br />
We realize this is a significant change, but I hope you'll engage with our new community and support our efforts for stronger LGBTQIA+ representation. <br />

== Download ==<br />
<br />
XML dumps of the content of a wiki, when available, are linked from its Special:Statistics page (example for Wookieepedia: Special:Statistics).<br />
<br />
<br />
There are two XML dumps per wiki (both in 7z format, formerly gzip):<br />
* Full history dump (large), e.g. https://s3.amazonaws.com/wikia_xml_dumps/m/mu/muppet_pages_full.xml.7z<br />
* Last version dump (small), e.g. https://s3.amazonaws.com/wikia_xml_dumps/m/mu/muppet_pages_current.xml.7z<br />
* Images: _images.tar (not always produced)<br />
<br />
More information can be found at Wikia:Database download.<br />
<br />
=== History ===<br />
<br />
<br />
A December 2012 dump of unknown completeness is the last one made available on the domain http://dumps.wikia.net/. The XML contained in it should be good, but were not all verified.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A script to list all unarchived Wikia wikis has been produced.<br />
<br />
<br />
As of 2017, only administrators are allowed to request a dump update for a wiki.<br />
<br />
<br />
Since 2016, several domain name changes have happened. Most wikis were moved under fandom.com, some under wikia.org. Additionally, language-specific subdomains have been eliminated and replaced by directories on the same subdomain, for instance townn-titles.fandom.com/ru.<br />
<br />
Around April 2019, the very prominent LyricWiki was closed, as in frozen: no further edits are allowed, but content is still available. The copyright status of the wiki had always been questionable. Elsewhere in 2019, some companies escalated their dubious copyright claims on lyrics against other aggregators like Google and LyricFind (who had also given a license to Wikia).<br />
<br />
<br />
As of February 2020, Wikia wikis get created and shut down at a rate of over 4000 per week. The very large majority of inactive, closed and deleted wikis are just wikis which failed to receive any real contribution in their life; however, sometimes things are more complicated.<br />
<br />
<br />
In November 2021, several NSFW wikis were forcefully shut down.<br />
<br />
In late 2021, the remaining Wikia-branded wikis were migrated to the fandom.com domain.<br />
<br />
On January 19 2021 it was announced that the LGBTQIA+ wikis will be merged together.<br />
<br />
== Moved wikis ==<br />
<br />
Do *not* presume the Wikia version of a wiki is the only version or the most up-to-date version as it may be years out of date if the original authors left years ago. There is a partial list of moved wikis at http://awa.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Moved_wikis<br />
<br />
Former Wikia projects which are now independent will need to be backed up individually from their new homes.<br />
<br />
Some wikis which moved out of Wikia have since been brought back under Wikia's umbrella with the purchase of Gamepedia, for instance PvXwiki (later gwpvx.com and gwpvx.gamepedia.com).<br />
<br />
<br />
== Acquisition of Curse Media ==<br />
Curse is the home of a successful Fandom competitor - Gamepedia - and many other gaming related projects, including end-of-life websites.<br />
<br />
On 2018-12-12 it was announced that Fandom would acquire Curse Media (but in fact seems to be the complete Curse LLC?)<br />
<br />
The account migration e-mails were sent out on 2018-12-24 and 2019-01-08:<br />
<blockquote>Hi,<br />

== Merger of LGBTQIA+ wikis ==<br />
On January 19, 2021, the following was posted on several wikis by a Fandom staff member: <br />
<blockquote>Hello,<br />
<br />

We are excited to introduce LGBTQIA+, a new wiki community that will serve as the home for all information about sexuality and gender identity.
