A selection of reasons why ArchiveTeam should never use Discord (except possibly as a way for people to report shutdowns to us):
- Proprietary, centralised platform
- Walled garden: hostile to third-party clients
- Staunchly anti-privacy and will lock you out of your account about it[1]
- 'What's a "data migration"?' – Discord
Ridiculous terms of service: every "upload" of content that you do not own the exclusive rights for (quotes, pictures, memes, etc.) is a violation of Discord's terms. This would include even things released under a permissive license (e.g. Creative Commons) or in the public domain.[2]This was resolved in the February/March 2022 update of the terms.[3]- For profit without ads via premium subscriptions ('Nitro'), game sales, and other minor revenue sources, but yet to make a profit[4]
Or, in summary:
<Frogging> Seriously, Discord can fuck off forever.
