Summary of a discussion in #archiveteam-bs on hackint on 2020-07-21 ([https://hackint.logs.kiska.pw/archiveteam-bs/20200721/raw logs]): every "upload" of content that you do not own the exclusive rights for (quotes, pictures, memes, etc.) is a violation of Discord's terms. This would include even things released under a permissive license (e.g. Creative Commons) or in the public domain.
Or, in summary:

Discord is staunchly anti-privacy and will lock you out of your account about it: https://wowana.me/blog/guess-im-done-with-discord.xht

A selection of reasons why ArchiveTeam should never use Discord (except possibly as a way for people to report shutdowns to us):

  • Proprietary, centralised platform
  • Walled garden: hostile to third-party clients
  • Staunchly anti-privacy and will lock you out of your account about it[1]
  • 'What's a "data migration"?' – Discord
  • Ridiculous terms of service: every "upload" of content that you do not own the exclusive rights for (quotes, pictures, memes, etc.) is a violation of Discord's terms. This would include even things released under a permissive license (e.g. Creative Commons) or in the public domain.[2] This was resolved in the February/March 2022 update of the terms.[3]
  • For profit without ads via premium subscriptions ('Nitro'), game sales, and other minor revenue sources, but yet to make a profit[4]

Or, in summary:

<Frogging> Seriously, Discord can fuck off forever.
